O widgetach

What is a widget?

A widget is a portable chunk of code that can be added by the user to their own web page, web browser, desktop, blog or a social-networking site. Most widgets come in a graphic form and work as mini applications. Some of them make it possible to display information provided by another user from an external server or web page.

Widgets are small windows with a TV schedule, lotto winning numbers, a calculator, currency exchange rates, or stock exchange quotations. Each widget has the form selected by the internet user who has created it. Users may exchange widgets or upload them on special platforms to make them available for other users.

The widget market is seen as one of the most promising ones in online advertising. According to experts, widgets engage internet users better than any other form of online advertising, making it possible to develop personalized messages. Widgets are highly diverse; their content and form depend on the creativity and information needs of the creators of mini applications.

Widgets are becoming a key communication channel for marketers and brands, enabling the distribution of content and messages. The relationship between the brand and the consumer is more and more likely to be built by providing interesting widgets with a clear graphic reference to the brand. Such widgets are integrated with the user’s desktop, social networks, weblogs or start pages, making the person’s contact with the useful content and interesting graphics of the widget very frequent yet non-intrusive.

This is why widgets’ commercial importance is growing dynamically. Media planners see the possibility to manage widget content centrally as a tool for creating effective and visually attractive form of online advertising.

A new project of 8Fish

Widgetpot has made uploading widgets simpler than ever. Widgetpot is a widget hosting platform. It enables automatic creation of widgets, regardless of the platform (e.g., iGoogle, NetVibes). Widgetpot allows you to design your own widget – quickly and with no restrictions – and enables other users to download it for free.

Users visiting Widgetpot may exchange widgets and use mini applications created by others.

Widgetpot has also provided access to a review and recommendation system, enabling users to share their opinions on each widget. With Widgetpot, creating new widgets, e.g., with information from news sites, has become easier, more personalized, and faster than using RSS channels.
